Akaka Falls State Park

The 422 foot waterfall in this state park looks very stunning.

The Akaka Falls State Park is located north of Hilo along the old Mamalahoa highway. The main attraction in this area is the 422 foot waterfall which looks very stunning. An endemic Hawaiian species of goby fish which is called the Oopu alamoo can be found in the stream above the waterfall. The 100 foot tall Kahūnā Falls is also accessible from this area.

This park is open daily to visitors. Admission is $1.00 per person and free for local residents. In order to get to the Akaka Falls, visitors must first hike through the half mile paved trail. This is a popular tourist spot, so it’s advised to go here early during weekdays in order to avoid the huge crowds.
