Hapuna Beach State Recreation Area

This is one of the biggest and most popular beaches in Hawaii.

The Hāpuna Beach State Recreation Area is one of the largest and most popular beaches on the Big Island of Hawaii. The term ‘Hapuna’ which literally means ‘spring’ or ‘pool’ in the local language is one of a few white sand beaches on the west coast of the Big Island. The beach itself is known for its very fine white sand and clear blue waters which is perfect for swimming, snorkeling and just enough wave action for boogie boarding.

This park has an area of approximately 61 acres and is located along the Hapuna Beach Road. Admission is free for Hawaii residents and $5 for visitors. There are parking areas, pavilions, picnic areas, restrooms, showers, and a snack shack where you can purchase food. There are also lifeguards on duty on the beach throughout the day.

If you are planning to spend the day at the beach, it is recommended you bring your own umbrellas or rent one at one of the local shops as there is very little shade along the beach areas.
